Tony Holohan understands the hurt that can be caused by a bad bedside manner. Around a decade ago, Ireland’s then chief medical officer visited his terminally ill wife Emer in St James’s Hospital and found her talking incoherently with a high temperature.
Worried that she might have contracted sepsis, he pushed the call button. “Thank God you’re here,” he exclaimed when a nurse arrived, only to be coldly ordered to “Calm down.”
