Gardaí searching waters to determine if any bales of drugs floating in the sea
A boat gardaí believe was carrying a large consignment of cocaine has run aground off Co Wexford, with gardaí searching the waters.
The Irish Times understands a number of people who were rescued from the water have been arrested and were being questioned in a Co Wexford Garda station on Monday evening. The boat was being monitored by the authorities in the Republic on suspicion it was carrying drugs but ran aground as it was under surveillance. A rescue operation was commenced by the Irish Coast Guard.
The operation, which was ongoing on Monday evening, was being hampered by bad weather and gardaí have been unable to reach the vessel to inspect it. The waters were also being monitored in a bid to determine if any cargo, possibly bales of drugs, had been lost and were floating in the sea.
