Good news: denim shirts are always in style, making them a sound investment, no matter what the season. Quite often they are paraded around whenever a fashion brand wants to indulge a whim for wearing double denim or ‘double duty’ denim which, when done right, can look ultra cool. However, some people are hesitant when going head to toe in the fabric which, considering you put yourself at risk of Canadian tuxedo ridicule, is a fair concern.
My advice if you’re unsure about the look? Don’t do it. There are many wearable ways to pull off a denim shirt that don’t involve matching it to your trousers. See creative director of J Crew Olympia Gayot who rolls up the sleeves of her loose denim shirt and pairs it with pleat-front blue trousers. Her shirt is slouchy, delectable; it oozes cool. Equally, the season’s cord trousers in dark blue offer an alternative to jeans.
As for the shirt, seek out a denim shirt that is slightly oversized or ‘boyfriend’ in feel, it instantly looks more expensive. You want to be able to roll the sleeves up and for it to feel relaxed. Look to heavy denim, or silky-soft chambray fabrics , as well as washes that have a vintage aesthetic Shop some of our favourite styles below.
