Vera Pauw has left her mark on Irish football after a record-breaking four-year spell as manager.
And there are shades of the other two - Jack Charlton and Mick McCarthy - to her character. She is blunt, direct and likes to crack the odd joke. She rubs some people up the wrong way. But who in her role doesn’t make enemies?
Pauw contributed to the review, with her own analysis of everything that took place from day one - a narrow home defeat to Sweden - to that historic scoreless draw with Nigeria on July 31. So too did the players. There were so many glorious moments over her four-year reign - a debut win against Ukraine, Ireland’s first ever qualification success over a second-seed opponent.
Pauw’s past became a feature of last year. First, there was a huge outpouring of sympathy when she alleged that she was sexually abused in the 1980s. “It’s been a pleasure talking about the World Cup, guys. Really appreciate it,” said Katie McCabe at the conclusion of the press conference on the eve of the France game.
Ireland had been strong offensively in dead-ball situations and their only goal at the World Cup came directly from McCabe’s corner early on against Canada. Then there we heard that the team emerged after half-time against Canada, unaware that a change had been made at the break.
