The superstitious among us regard Friday the 13th as the unluckiest day of the year. And freaky events do seem to happen on this infamous date.
If you’re hiding under the covers this morning, you may have a dose of ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’ – or a fear of Friday the 13th.
The number 13 also got a bad rap thanks to a Norse myth about 12 gods enjoying a dinner party in Valhalla but when the uninvited 13th guest arrived in the form of troublemaker god Loki, it ended in death and tragedy. The tarot death card was also number 13. And many hotels and elevator manufacturers avoid 13th floors, while estate agents say homes with the number 13 on the front door are tougher to sell.
In 2010 in the US, the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute estimated that between $700-800million is lost every Friday the 13th as people are too terrified to leave their homes.
